Fore-Edge Paintings

Pictures of fore-edges on any book upon request.  Many of the edges shown here were painted by an artist who lived in Northeast England and painted from 1920 until his death in about 1960.  His works have never been sold until now.

 

1.      Shakespears works-1869-Sheldon and Co. NY.  Large 8vo. Bound in full stamped and gold tooled leather.   Contains a split  fore-edge painting. Side #1 Stratford upon Avon with a portrait of Shakespear and Side #2  A scene from Hamlet at the grave side. Book and edges in very good condition.  $1350.00

 

2.      Life of Christ-Wm. Mackenzie-London-(1860). Large 4to (12�). Bound in full gold tooled calf.  Contains a split fore-edge painting- Side #1 Norwich Cathedral and Side #2-Durham Cathedral.  Both book and edges in very good condition.  $650.00

 

3.      The Holy Bible-Oxford 1852- In two volumes bound in full dark blue morocco leather.  8vo . Each contains a fore-edge painting- Vol. A religious scene of an Angel, Moses, etc.  Vol 2. Jesus Christ Ascending with followers around.  This is a excellent set of fore-edges.  Books are near fine.  $1500.00 Pair.

 

4.      The Holy Bible-Alan Bell-1833 in two volumes. 32 mo. (4/5�). Bound in full gold tooled morocco leather.  Each contains a fore-edge painting. Vol #1-A Scene at Holy Island. Vol #2  A Secene at Holy Island. This is a nice pair of books. Both edges and books very good.   $450.00

 

5.      The Psalms of David by Watts.  Wilson-London 1812- 32 mo size. (4/5�). Bound in full gold tooled morocco leather. The fore-edge painting is Hastings Church. Both edge and book in very good condition.  $300.00

 

6.      New Standard Bible- Holman 1975. Small 8vo. Bound in a full leather case that surrounds the Bible.  This is a recent item.  The fore-edge is lovely Castle/church scene in the country.  Both book and edge near fine.  $250.00

 

7.      Die Bibel.-Berlin 1878- Bound in full black leather, size is 6 inches. The fore-edge scene is the Oast Houses in Kent.  Both book and edge are in good condition.    $250.00

 

8.      Common Prayer and Hymns-Eyre and Spottiswoode-(1920/30)-32 mo size. Bound in the material called Ivorine. The fore-edge is a night scene of St. Pauls in London.  Both book and edge excellent.  $200.00

 

9.      Common Prayer and Church Hymns in two volumes in a slip case. Oxford-1880. Bound in full black leather with a gold cross on each. Size is 4/5 inches.  Vol 1 has edge of is the Guides Hut at Basingwerk Monastery and Vol 2 is  Basingwerk Monastery at Flintshire.  Both books and edges very good.  $275.00 Pair

 

10.  Book of Common Prayer-Oxford (1890). 24 mo (5/6�). Bound in full red calf. Fore-edge scene is the Oast Houses in the sunset.  A very nice edge. Both book and edge in excellent condition.  $275.00
